TRC Worldwide Engineering provided structural engineering services for a new Public Safety & Health Building in Rutherford County, Tennessee. Designed as a multi-use facility, the building includes essential features such as a tornado shelter, emergency medical dispatch station and bay, accommodations for up to 14 individuals, a community kitchen, communal gathering areas, and dedicated fire station bays with associated support spaces.
The structure is a single-story, load-bearing CMU building supported by a shallow foundation. It spans approximately 11,600 GSF under roof with 11,100 GSF of conditioned space, including a mezzanine level of roughly 1,000 SF above the tornado/safe room. The soil-supported slab-on-grade design eliminates the need for structured slabs or stem walls, allowing for consistent site elevation and streamlined construction.
TRC’s scope included full structural design services for the building itself, as well as the concrete lid over the tornado shelter, the pre-engineered wood truss roof system, and supplemental structures such as the dumpster enclosure and monument signage. This facility follows a prototype design previously developed, reinforcing community safety and service delivery in the region.
