IUPUI Science and Engineering Laboratory Building | Indiana University Indianapolis, Indiana

The Science Engineering Laboratory Building provides critical multidisciplinary teaching and research laboratory and classroom space for the School of Science and the School of Engineering and Technology. In support of the life and health science missions of IUPUI, this facility is designed to foster collaboration and provide flexibility to meet the significant planned growth of the research programs.

A two- story commons connects to the quad and acts as a student and faculty hub- serving as the primary building entrance and gathering space. These public spaces compliment the first floor biology and forensics instructional labs by encouraging student-to-student and student-to-faculty interaction and providing areas to meet outside of the lab. The second level, with a mixture of faculty offices and research labs, is organized around a block of biology and biomedical engineering labs. A new science animal resource center area on the third floor provides support to the Schools' research programs.

The modern building's exterior design is sleek and simplistic with materials and colors consistent with the campus while introducing some unique treatments and details which help distinguish it from the surrounding buildings. The light-filled interior public spaces use simple, clean details to work in concert with the exterior and reinforce the forward thinking nature of a research building.

Constructed in multiple phases, the first phase provides critical teaching and research laboratories and vivarium spaces while the future phase(s) will provide classrooms, meeting rooms, administrative offices and additional research laboratories. The building is designed to achieve a minimum LEED Silver Certification.
