NJIT Student Housing – A Blend of Innovation and Heritage - New Jersey

The NJIT Student Housing project redefines campus living, combining cutting-edge design with a deep appreciation for history. Completed in just 15 months, this eight-story residence hall serves as a modern hub for student life while honoring its roots as the former site of a 1908 public schoolhouse.

The building is constructed with 750 precast wall panels, both insulated and non-insulated, and 40 precast stair risers, showcasing durable materials and a sleek aesthetic. Architectural finishes, including thin brick and sandblasted precast concrete, add visual depth and texture. A standout feature of the design is the floor-to-ceiling glass tower, which spans all eight stories, providing striking views and abundant natural light. The cast-in-place podium supports seven levels of hollow-core flooring and precast concrete walls, ensuring structural integrity.

A unique tribute to the past lies in the preservation of the original schoolhouse’s main entrance arch. This century-old architectural element was carefully incorporated into the lobby, allowing students to experience a daily connection to history as they pass through the preserved archway.

With 548 beds, the residence hall is designed to enhance student life through thoughtful amenities. Residents enjoy bicycle storage, underground parking, a game room, creative workspaces, lounges, a grass courtyard, and both indoor and outdoor café options. The NJIT Student Housing project exemplifies the seamless integration of modern design, functionality, and historical preservation, creating a dynamic space for living, learning, and community.
