TRC Worldwide Engineering provided structural engineering design, construction administration, and threshold inspection services for the horizontal and vertical expansion of Gulf Coast Medical Center in Fort Myers, Florida. This project added 275 new beds, increasing the facility’s total capacity to 624 beds, along with multiple facility expansions to enhance patient care, emergency services, and operational efficiency.
Key additions included the expansion of inpatient nursing units, adding three new elevated floors totaling 183,000 square feet, along with a 64,000-square-foot Ancillary Services Building, designed to accommodate a future vertical expansion. A new 8,000-square-foot Central Utility Plant was integrated to support the facility’s growing infrastructure. Enhancements to patient care services included a 3,400-square-foot Clinical Services expansion, a 5,000-square-foot Laboratory addition, and a 25,600-square-foot Emergency Unit expansion, featuring a new canopy and helicopter pad.
To further improve hospital operations, the project incorporated a 5,400-square-foot Environmental Services addition, a 6,000-square-foot Pharmacy expansion, and new space for Radiology (5,000 SF) and Respiratory Therapy (2,500 SF). The ICU was expanded by 9,700 square feet, creating two separate areas on the third floor, while food service operations were upgraded with multiple expansions across the third and fourth floors.
The structural system integrates a composite structural steel frame and architectural precast exterior, ensuring durability and flexibility for future healthcare advancements.
